I've read and enjoyed two of Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano mysteries, but this book was just astoundingly bad.

Either a true crime story, or historical fiction based on a true story -- I honestly don't know which -- it's pretty much devoid of any of the humor or style of the Montalbano novels, and by the end I was totally confused about whether author Camilleri concluded that the Sacco brothers did or didn't commit the crimes for which they were convicted, or whether his final answer was "who I've read and enjoyed two of Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano mysteries, but this book was just astoundingly bad.

Try to find books about "Anarchism" and you will see a paralelism with this social family opresed. I continue reading it, great and ralistic. The Wild, Wild West of Sicily Review of the English translation of the Italian language original La banda Sacco This was a very compelling historical fiction novella situated in the Sicily of the early Mussolini years of the 's. Mussolini's anti-Mafia enforcer Cesare Mori has a role to play but the bulk of the story is built on a faux-non-fiction of an honest family of Sicilian brothers forced to become outlaws when persecuted by both the Mafia and the authorities.

No such actual historical gang seems to have existed though.

I thoroughly enjoyed this although I had not been very impressed with the first of the Inspector Montalbano series in The Shape of Water.

I think I'll have to give some of the later Montalbano stories a try. So asks Andrea Camilleri in this fact-based historical novella about the consequences of standing up to the Mafia in s Sicily.

Based on historical documents, this novella reads like nonfiction and relates the tale of Sicily's Sacco brothers, socialists on the Mafia-controlled island, who fought organized crime back in the s. Fascinating story with richly developed characters good and bad ; a twisted plot with lots of political and social details, and strongly viewed issues; written in a graceful, informative style; disturbing tone, grim, gritty, sobering; an unhurried pace that includes myriad details; framed by details of life under the Mafia that resonate today, when not much has changed politically.

A compelling look at a disturbing situation. This is a brisk history of the Sacco family, based on their family papers. Luigi Sacco had started life as a field peasant, but through hard work and a knowledge of pistachio trees, had built up a prosperous business and by the mids, he also had a large, equally hard-working, family.

In Raffadali, where they lived in Sicily, the family was known to be kind, fair and law-abiding, running their business by mild socialist principles. Unfortunately, the prosperity and the socialism would bring This is a brisk history of the Sacco family, based on their family papers. Unfortunately, the prosperity and the socialism would bring them into conflict with both the Mafia and the Fascists.

This story is told with Andrea Camilleri's customary mordant wit, eye for the absurd and humanity. It demonstrates how the Mafia works - both in the absence of political will and, also, with its connivance. It's unadorned with speculation and is almost brutal in presenting the evidence.

It is, also, still, regrettably relevant. Interesting story, bad translation. This is the allegedly true account of an honest and hard working family in Sicily in the early 20th century whose lives and livelihood were destroyed by the mafia in connivance with the corrupt and ineffectual state. The family, through their persistent hard work, had managed to build successful businesses, and refused to pay the mafia extortion money.

In retaliation the mafia threatened them repeatedly, burned their farm buildings, attempted to steal their livestock, damaged their orchards, and killed or attempted to kill more than one family member. Still, the Sacco family refused to give in. Eventually the mafia changed tactics and began to use the state apparatus to their benefit, by threatening or bribing people to charge the Saccos with serious crimes.

Although the police and carabinieri knew full well what was happening they claimed that their hands were tied and that they had to pursue the charges.

Corrupt or intimidated judges went along with the charade. In the end the core of the Sacco family were on the run for years from both the mafia and from the state. This was not part of the Camilleri series, but rather an expose of brothers and their families who are hounded and abused by the Mafia because they will not pay extortion money and, although the village knows they are innocent, the Mafia continue to hound them and blame them for various crimes with the tacit approval of the police who will not stand up to the Mafia themselves.

It is a sad tale which continues for years and years as the family is worn down and almost obliterated. I just found it This was not part of the Camilleri series, but rather an expose of brothers and their families who are hounded and abused by the Mafia because they will not pay extortion money and, although the village knows they are innocent, the Mafia continue to hound them and blame them for various crimes with the tacit approval of the police who will not stand up to the Mafia themselves.

I just found it depressing and frustrating how good was continuously squashed by evil people -- there was little of the redemption and even humous that can be found in Camilleri's delightful mysteries. I was a little wrong footed by the style of writing at the start, as this is a report, a non-fiction account of historical events, rather than a novel which I was expecting.

Reality gives the tale weight and horror. The story is progressive and structured and boldly told with little explicit imagery, but there is a powerful emergen I was a little wrong footed by the style of writing at the start, as this is a report, a non-fiction account of historical events, rather than a novel which I was expecting. A short but serious read. Camilleri himself refers to this saga, culled from real life events, as a "western".

A reviewer from Oklahoma refers to it as a "spaghetti western". Which made me think of the origins of that genre. Could the genre be a spoof, a critique of la "Cosa Nostra"? This book is a little life lesson about the importance of a governing and policing infrastructure with integrity; and when the rotters infiltrate a civil society, it's like an irremovable stain in the fabric Interesting story of how the Mafia criminalizes its opponents. It's told very matter of factly, as opposed to vividly rendered in a narrative.

By the end I couldn't tell if this was fiction or journalism.

Raffadali, near Agrigento, in the s. The Sacco brothers have risen from abject poverty to a respectable position as farmers owning a few acres of land. They are free men, with Socialist ideas, they respect the state, and have made their own way following the example of their father Luigi, who taught them the importance of hard work and respect for others, and who made his fortune through the art of grafting pistachio trees. Life changes one morning, when the head of the family receives first one anonymous letter, then another, and is the victim of an attempted burglary. Luigi Sacco promptly reports the demands for protection money to the Carabinieri, but they are uncomfortable: nobody in the village has ever dared to denounce the mafia; people prefer to suffer in silence. Henceforth the Sacco family have to defend themselves — against the mafia, against the forces of order, against conniving villagers, against traitors, and against local politicians. They have to contend with attempted murders, trumped-up charges and false testimonies.
