Sort order. Start your review of One day an expedition is formed to do more research on this creature, one of which is the French professor Pierre Aronnax. They succeed in locating the creature, but not in finding out what it is, exactly. Pierre and two others are thrown over into the sea and are finally picked up by the mysterious monster, which happens to be a submarine, lead by the equally mysterious captain Nemo. To be honest, I didn't really know what to expect of this story other than what the synopsis told me.
It happened to be more scientific than I anticipated on. However, this didn't get in the way of me liking the story, fortunately! My copy came with illustrations which added lots to the experience! Bol bilim, bol bol bilim, bilim bilim bilim View 1 comment.

Sep 27, ilknur a. The storyline: Because this is the first part of the book, there hasn't been a too exciting storyline yet.
They're hunting for a thing that they believe is a huge aquatic animal, but is actually a submarine. Our main characters find themselves aboard said submarine after they set out to find it. The biggest part of the book is the main characters just discovering and experiencing stuff. The characters: Aronnax is a quite regular Victorian gentlem 3 stars: enjoyable, but Verne's a bit of a showoff.
The characters: Aronnax is a quite regular Victorian gentleman, very knowledgable about the world. I feel like Verne puts in a character like this in all 3 books of his I read, just to show of how smart he is.
I mean, I know it's science fiction, but boy oh boy the science. Paragraphs on water density or the circumference of the earth are more of a rule than an exception. His helper Koen is allright, a nice boy who can call Aronnax out on his bullshit. I feel like Ned is a stereotypical character tho I believe he's Canadian who just wants to hunt animals and eat meat all the time.
The worldbuilding: It's set on planet earth, and so far it's not too special yet. I like the parts where Verne describes the underwater world, they're quite magical sometimes. The atmosphere: like I said, sometimes this book is more a science book than a fiction book. It's all scientific talk so there's quite a direct vibe. Best part: the first underwater walk. This book was written in the 's and sometimes it really shows.
Back then, it used to be science fiction, and you can tell by how the book describes electric lights and this "futuristic" submarine. Now, it can be described more as historical fiction, with everything described in this book being very believable for today's standards.
This book isn't as hard to read as many other books from this era, but sometimes it is a little difficult to read with the dated by today's standards word choic This book was written in the 's and sometimes it really shows. Je suis devenu une zoologue mon dieu!!! An amazing book I must say.
The way Jules Verne portrays the scenes under the sea and fight with the Nautilus, truly amazing and thrilling experience. Et maintenant. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

This was on my TBR list for a long time, ever since I found the old hard cover versions in my grandmothers things. So now 8 years later i managed to get this done.
I liked it, it was an easy read and considering the options on a boat are limited I am pleasently satisfied with the way Jules created the story. Nostalgia in optima forma.
A very exciting first part of a great underwater adventure. Calomel rated it really liked it Jul 25, There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
