In part I Chapters , we introduce the field of bioinformatics. In part II Chapters , we discuss functional genomics. Part III Chapters describes the tree of life from a genomics perspective, including chapters on viruses, the prokaryotes, and the eukaryotes. Practically, I have used this textbook in teaching two courses: an introduction to bioinformatics Chapters and a course on genomics in which we survey the tree of life Chapters Each chapter of the textbook refers to web documents that you can find on this site.

For example, Chapter 7 describes how phylogenetic trees are made. You can use the web documents to obtain the raw sequence data that go into making a particular tree, and to see the outputs from a variety of software packages that produce phylogenetic trees. The web pages for each chapter also include powerpoints, pdfs, audio files, links to relevant websites, and other material from bioinformatics and genomics courses I have taught at Johns Hopkins.
