Chandogya Upanisad with the Commentary of Sankaracarya / Gambhirananda
Now, right at the outset, I should declare that I am no academic. I do not know Sanskrit, and my only contact with the Upanishads and other parts of the Vedas is through English translations. Such statements usually cause knowledgeable academicians and experts to sigh and discount any further discussion, yet in my defense I should say that I have made an honest attempt to tackle the Upanishads in an open and fresh manner so as to extract their wisdom in a way that is in conformity with modern knowledge. My confidence in tackling the Upanishads is also bolstered by the fact that I rely on the translations by Swami Vireswarananda, Swami Gambhirananda and Swami Madhavananda brought out by the Advaita ashrama. These are as authorative translations as any, and I do not feel any Sanskrit expert would argue that there are any major deficiencies in their translations.
