GUIDO MOCAFICO NATURE MORTE PDF

Still-life artists of this period wanted to create the perfect illusion. Generally they are very ordinary items that are grouped around a skull in the centre of the picture. Both the painting and the photo encompass the ideal of the vanitas genre. In them we see the classic symbols of death laid out on a smooth marble slab.

Another of our favourites at Arles this year is the Italian artist-photographer Guido Mocafico. Practising in Paris, Mocafico, along with his production team of food and flower designers, creates large-scale, still life pictures. Click here to see more of the exhibition. Mocafico, however, takes it one step further, creating the illusion of painting through photography — the ultimate expression of hyper-reality. Still-life paintings, or Vanitas, were born of the Rococo obsession with artifice and the superficial.

His photographs confront us with a double image of reality, an illusion of a painting and in turn an illusion of the real. He plays with his viewers, drawing us into a world of shadows, light, colour and texture, then throws us into confusion whilst we attempt to make sense of the illusion. At first glance, the photographs seem hardly distinguishable from the compositions of the Old Masters that supplement the exhibition, because in his remarkable works, which are planned down to the last detail, Mocafico replicates typical still lifes of the 17th and 18th centuries.
