Lighting is also required for indoor sporting facilities during the day. With increasing power and operational costs, energy efficiency should be a key consideration when designing a lighting system. Popular sports, such as baseball, tennis, basketball and football as well as recreational social activities, such as horseshoe pitching and croquet are covered.

Venues for spectators of amateur, collegiate, and professional sports are complex facilities that should provide not only for the spectators, but also the equipment used in modern sports broadcasting. This document does not address those needs, so the reader should look for guidance from the sports league or the project consultant.

Modern practice frequently allow amateurs and professionals to compete against each other in the same facilities and at similar skill levels. As the skill level is elevated, players and spectators require a better and more sophisticated luminous environment. Accordingly, facilities should be designed to satisfy the most talented players and accommodate the greatest potential spectator capacity. The purpose of this recommended practice is to provide design criteria for new lighting systems and for the evaluation of existing installations. Included are illuninance recommentdations for aerial sports or groundlevel sports, for major sports such as baseball, tennis, basketball, and football as well as for recreational and social activities such as horseshoe pitching and croquet. Recommendations are also given for lighting general purpose facilities and multi-sport stadiums.
