Huey Maximilian Bonfigliano has a problem: While he is safely divorced from his shrewish first wife, Janice, who shot his dog and even took a bead on him, he feels he cannot regain his "manhood" until he woos and wins her one more time if only to put his broken marriage behind him once and for all.

He enlists the aid of hi An alternate cover for this isbn can be found here. He enlists the aid of his lifelong buddy, Aldo Scalicki, a confirmed bachelor who tries, without apparent success, to convince Huey that he would be better off sticking with his new lady friend, Teresa, a usually placid young waitress whose indignation flares when she learns what Huey is up to.

In a moonlit balcony scene hilariously reminiscent of Cyrano de Bergerac Aldo pleads his lovesick friend's case and, to his astonishment, Janice capitulates although not for long.

However we do learn that her earlier abuse of Huey was intended to make him "act like a man" which, at last, he does. And, more than that, he and the audience become aware that, in the final essence, "the greatest and only success is to be able to love" a truth which emerges delightfully from the heartwarming, wonderfully antic and always imaginatively conceived action of the play.

See, now, the thing about John Patrick Shanley is that both of my principal acting teachers at one point or other have forced me to do a piece from a Shanley play to get me "out of my box" as it were, because his characters are so incredibly not like me.

Italian American Reconciliation

Even though Huey has been divorced for three years from his toxic ex Janice Anne Nottage , he stills longs for her so much that his food has no taste. So, he decides to break up with his long-suffering girlfriend Teresa, Dani Stoller the soup shop lady, to pursue Janice once again. Aldo gets caught in the middle. Few writers can match Shanley for his use of lyrical working class dialogue to create urban, working class opera. It was written just as Shanley was reaping the rewards of his Oscar winning script for Moonstruck , leading him to write a work similar enough to draw crowds at a time when he was so busy that he did not have the time or the need to tighten the work. Still, there is much pleasure to be found in Italian American Reconciliation.

THEATER REVIEW : Familiar Shanley Love Theme Nicely Entrenched at Bowery

Just as the new Bowery Theatre, now firmly under the leadership of artistic director Ralph Elias and production manager Mickey Mullaney, clearly believes in the power of a Shanley script. For this play is not just for lovers, but for that larger class of survivors who dare to take a chance on love after getting burned again and again. It gives you hope--not that you will get a special dispensation from pain--but that pain can be a threshold that, if passed, can lead to joy. Everyone thinks Huey is crazy when he tries to get back his ex-wife, Janice. On another occasion, she tried to shoot Huey. Only Janice can heal him, he tells his best friend, Aldo Scalicki.
