Photo 1 of 8. Brain coral, small colonies, but very broad and deep valleys. Many colonies consist only of one valley, sometimes with a few short side lobes or side branches. Many are not attached to the substrate. Where colonies have several valleys, there is usually a groove along the tops of the adjoining walls. It could be confused with a small Colpophyllia which has more spaces between the septa and a discontinuous trabecular columella along the valley floor.

Colonies commonly occur in seagrass, rubble or even sand. The attached form may be a distinct species, M.

Rose coral Manicina areolata Linnaeus, Description: This species occurs into two distinct growth forms. The most common form consists of small elliptical colonies with a long, continuous central valley and several short side valleys and a cone-shaped underside. The colonies are small, often less than 10 cm.

Manicina areolata , commonly known as rose coral , is a colonial species of stony coral. It occurs in shallow water in the West Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, sometimes as small solid heads and sometimes as unattached cone-shaped forms. Budding is intracalicular, occurring within the whorl of tentacles of the polyp. The polyps share an elongate oral disc with the tentacles round the rim. Manicina areolata has two entirely different growth forms.
